Greatest Racehorse of All-Time Criteria too Subjective to Declare

Makybe Diva, the previous holder of the prizemoney record for Australian thoroughbred racing, took in well over half of her $14.5 million haul from three Melbourne Cups wins. That amount for three consecutive equaled $8.7 million.

She also won a Cox Plate, but it is highly unlikely that Winx will ever win a Melbourne Cup, as it is unlikely Chris Waller would ever let his prize pupil run two miles.

For her three Cox Plate wins, Winx earned $5.5 million, which makes the fact that she has passed Makybe Diva on the all-time prizemoney list all the more impressive, since Winx spotted Diva $3.2 million right there.

Comparing the two strictly by prizemoney presents two problems, then. Prizemoney has climbed since Makybe Diva won three Cups. Not exponentially, the way it has in some sports, but still enough to introduce an element into the comparison. Factor in that Redzel earned $5.5 million for The Everest to get some further idea of the difficulty of comparisons based on prizemoney.

Makybe Diva ran 36 times. Winx now stands at 32. It seems as though she is done for the spring racing season, but if she comes back in the autumn and Waller stays true to his pattern, Winx will probably run about four times, making this criterion a wash.

Waller may take Winx to Japan, where the prizemoney does expand exponentially, or he may take her to England, just to prove to the Brits that a transport is every bit the equal to the bluebloods.

The true test for Winx will be breaking the Group 1 tie she currently shares with Black Caviar. That may be a truer measure than prizemoney, because it is more constant, at least since 1980, when the current race quality guidelines were established.

Winx has three to go to tie Black Caviar for consecutive wins. If she does that, the all-time greatest debate is over, until sometime in the future, when the next once-in-a-lifetime horse comes along and aims at the targets in front of him or her.

Personally, we would like to see a three-race-head-to-head series between Winx and that California pretender Arrogate, in order to set that Longines crowd straight, but only if new rankings due out in 2018 do not move Winx to the fore in the world rankings.
