Grant Palmer Betting Insights – The Championships Day 2
After an outstanding Day 1 of The Championships last weekend, we head back to Randwick for four Group 1s on Saturday with a sell out crowd expected for WINX’s final race. We caught up with Palmerbet CEO Grant Palmer to get his views on the four Group 1s that headline the ten race card.
All eyes will be on Randwick at 3:05pm when Winx lines up for the last time in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Can anyone beat her?
The short answer is no. WINX has been absolutely fantastic for our industry and her owners should be applauded for all they have done to promote racing. The media coverage is unprecedented and the ability of all involved to soak up the pressure and keep smiling is remarkable.
On the track she is a star. She will jump a good things price at $1.08 but will go out a winner. The sell out crowd will go home happy.
Has anything been backed to win the Australian Oaks?
VERRY ELLEEGANT has once again been well backed to win this week. We opened her up at $2.10 and she has shortened into $1.65 with some big bets placed. If she can settle in the run she will win, but still looks a little green. It’s frightening to think how good she could be when she matures.
The Group 1 Coolmore Legacy (Queen of the Turf) for the girls looks an open race. Who do you like?
The Queen of the Turf is always a good race and this year’s field is a competitive one. ALIZEE ($6) returns to female company after a disappointing run in the Doncaster and must be respected. Fillies have won the last two Queen of the Turf’s and I think AMPHITRITE ($9) and FUNDAMENTALIST ($15) are the value on Saturday. AMPITRITE is a proven Group 1 performer, while FUNDAMENTALIST has been unlucky to not have picked up a couple of Group 1 wins already this prep.
Last but not least, we have the Sydney Cup. Dubhe looks an interesting runner for Godolphin. Is he the winner?
DUBHE ($3.6) was a dominant winner in Dubai last start over the 3200 metres and gets in well with the 52.5kg. Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby has a remarkable record travelling horses to Australia for hit and run missions and if DUBHE runs to his recent form he will win. Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy is a positive booking as well.
If DUBHE is below his best, BIG DUKE ($9) and YOGI ($13) look the main dangers. BIG DUKE has been racing well in the lead ups and is ready to peak, while YOGI will stay all day. They have both impressed with their more traditional style Sydney Cup preparations.
