French Import Spectroscope Trying to Back in to Doncaster Mile
For thoroughbreds that do their best at the middle distances, the strategy is simple-avoid any race where Winx is likely to show up.
A French import named Spectroscope, after making a successful Australian debut in a Benchmark 89 Handicap at Rosehill over 1350 metres, is doing just that, targeted for Saturday’s Group 3 Doncaster Prelude at 1600 metres. From there, it could be the 1600 m Group 1 Doncaster Handicap at Royal Randwick, although given the way thoroughbreds are raced nowadays; the Handicap might be too close to the Prelude for comfort.
Randwick has several other opportunities during April, so only Spectroscope’s trainer and connections have inside insight, but it is highly unlikely that they would take the foolhardy step of trying the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Goldolphin owns the colt foaled in 2013, and he has done all right by them, winning twice and placing four times from seven starts on French courses. His sire was the USA’s Medaglia D’Oro of the US out of Diamondrella of Great Britain, with several ties to Canada’s Northern Dancer and a few other notables.
If Spectroscope does win the Doncaster Prelude this weekend, he will have a spot in the Doncaster Mile if those who call the shots so desire.
