First Big Meeting of Autumn at Randwick Racecourse This Weekend
Royal Randwick racecourse in Sydney is staging its first big meeting of the autumn racing season on Saturday, with two Group 2s and two Group 3s on the card.
The meeting has lost a bit of lustre, since Chris Waller decided to hold Winx out of the Group 2 Apollo Stakes, rather than risk her streak with a rider other than the careless Hugh Bowman, who is waiting out a suspension he incurred for his less than careful riding at Warwick Farm.
The weather looks to be a balmy 27 degrees, the track is rated good and the rail will be in the natural position.
After three preliminaries, the Group 3 ACJC Southern Cross Stakes (1200 m) will be the first of the higher quality races to return to Randwick.
Nine horses are in the field as of this moment, with Deploy occupying the favorite’s spot at $3 out of the third barrier. Next is Clearly Innocent at $4.40 coming out of number 4. Then comes Dothraki out of five and Kaerpernick from the eighth position at $5.50. Boss Lane could figure into things at $9.50, jumping from the seventh slot.
Race 6 is the Group 2 Apollo Stakes, where Addictive Nature, Comin’ Through, Prized Icon Endless Drama and Global Glamour must all be feeling very fortunate that Winx is waiting this one out.
Race 7 is the Group 3 Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes, another sprint, where Raiment and Glen Schofield are $4.40 favourites. Eckstein, at $5.50, has the hot Brenton Avdulla for a rider and Faraway Town at $6.50 could be a factor.
Next comes race 8, the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes, where Alizee is the clear favourite at $1.85. The closest pursuer in the odds is Melody Belle at $5.
