Final Group 1 of 2017 – 2018 Season Tatt’s Tiara at Doomben
A few days out from Winter Stakes (Tatt’s Tiara) the final Group 1 thoroughbred racing of the 2017 – 2018 season, the betting picture is wide open and the prices reflect a lack of consensus.
The one area of agreement is the favourtism shown to Champagne Cuddles, but she could manage only third in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap last time out. She is matched at $6 by Super Cash on some of the betting services, with two currently carrying $7. Miss Wilson and Prompt Response.
Moss Trip at $8 and Shillelagh at $9 top the list of runners in single digits for the $500,000 weight-for-age fillies and mares feature on the final day of the Brisbane winter carnival.
The list of nominations is long and a clearer picture will begin to emerge when the final field is made public and the barrier draw is held.
So far as the Tatt’s Tiara itself is concerned, it has been run since 1989 and should be jumping at Eagle Farm. The race was move to the Gold Coast Racecourse in 2015, as that venue was being refurbished, but that situation has yet to be resolved, as no lack of sources will point out.
As a weight-for-age, gender restricted event, it might be expected that the race, although comparatively young, would have multiple winners galore, but on Bonanova has won twice, in 1999 and 2000.
Tycoon Tara won in 2017 from Prompt Response and In Her Time.
Tycoon Tara is now retired. Prompt Response does not seem to be on the list of potential racers, even though she took second in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes.
In Her Time won the Group 1 Galaxy at Rosehill Racecourse back in March, but her most recent effort at Doomben in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 found here a disappointing ninth to English, the horse In Her Time Beat in winning the Galaxy.
