Field and Barriers for the 2016 Melbourne Cup Finalised
The final field and barrier draw have been established for the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Tuesday next.
Twenty-four horses, barring any scratches, will take part in the Race That Stops A Nation.
Hartnell leads the list as a $5.00 favourite. He has drawn barrier 12 and will be right alongside his Goldolphin stablemate Oceanographer that is listed at $7.00. That horse made his way into the race by taking out the 2,500 m Group 3 Lexus Stakes at Flemington.
Number three favourite Jameka will jump from barrier three at $8.00, with third-favorite Bondi Beach two spots outside her at $9.00.
The only other runner with a single-digit quote is Bondi Beach at $9.00, so for the purposes of reasonable guessing, it would seem that the winner of the 2016 edition of the race will be won from the inner half of the field.
Another horse that seemed to have the potential to pull off the win was Scottish, but no longer, since that Goldolphin representative has been scratched, leaving trainer Charlie Appleby to rest his hopes on Oceanographer and Qewy.
For anyone interested in taking a bonus bet or two and staking a longshot, Pentathlon at $126.00 and Rose of Virginia at $201.00 will certainly fulfill the regulations of any bookmaker.
