Edmonds Wavering on Running Houtzen in QTIS at Eagle Farm
Gold Coast based trainer Toby Edmonds is having second thoughts about running his 2YO Magic Millions Classic winner Houtzen at a sprint at Eagle Farm, as she (and what sort of a girl’s name is Houtzen?) was asked to carry 63 kg. in the QTIS Two-Year-Old on Saturday.
That does seem like an awful lot of weight to place on a two-year-old with three official races on her resume. The handicappers must have had their heads in a dark and warm place to risk losing a big attraction to a minor race to make such a move.
Edmonds had wanted to give his young charge a gallop prior to attempting the Group 1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill on March 18, but apparently, he did not want to expose her to the Group 2 Reisling Slipper Trial at Randwick this weekend or the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes at Canberra.
The Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes did not make sense, either, as it would not give Houtzen sufficient rest prior to the Golden Slipper the weekend following.
If we were of the wagering sort, we would speculate that Edmonds would choose the Black Opal Stakes, which makes some sense geographically and is run at set weights plus penalty, although what penalty Houtzen could expect makes that choice unpredictable.
She would most likely have to deal with the likes of other talented two-year-olds, such as Chauffeur, Khan and Jukebox.
