Early Look at Spring Racing Marquee Races
The big spring races are not that far off, even though it sometimes seems so, but we wanted to have a look at the futures markets and provide some observations.
The first Group 1 race of the year is the Winx Stakes at Randwick. The race’s namesake is in the field for the August race and Ladbrokes is offering her at $1.15. At the moment, the list of nominations is long, but it would seem as though the other 35 horses on the list will be going for the second place money. Many trainers have said as much.
Further along the calendar, The Everest field is still being filled, but the futures market seems to belong to Trapeze Artist at $4.50 and last year’s winner, Redzel at $6. Ladbrokes has Chautauqua at $18 and it seems as though the big grey has survived his most recent test and left the barriers in a Flemington jumpout, so the stewards’ embargo may be lifted, which, however, is no guarantee that Chautauqua will draw one of the coveted The Everest slots.
The list of nominations for the 2018 Caulfield Cup is quite long. Kings Will Dream is on the first line for now, at $8.50. In eight attempts, he has won six, quite impressive save for none of the wins was above Listed Quality, but he beat Fastnet Dragon in the Mornington Cup over 2400 metres, so the Caulfield Cup might well suit him.
As for the Cox Plate, see the above about the Winx Stakes, with the exception that this far out, she is quoted at $1.55.
The Melbourne Cup has a long list, with Chestnut Coat at the top on $14. Kings Will Dream is at $21, but watch him plunge if he should win the Caulfield Cup and watch the markets soar for Cups double betting.
