Eagle Farm This Weekend Offers Victory Stakes and Gunsynd Classic
There are no Group 1 races remaining on the Australian thoroughbred-racing calendar for the balance of April, but weight-for-age racing aficionados have the Group 2 Sir Byrne Hart Stakes, a 1200 m affair for the sprinters, at Eagle Farm in Brisbane this weekend.
The race attracts mainly the Queenslander locals. Last year, it was run at Doomben and was won by Fell Swoop.
Punters will find it on Saturday’s card as the sixth race of the meeting. Online bookmaker Sportsbet has it listed as the Ellyce Galvin Victory Stakes.
This year’s race will feature a short field of seven, so barrier position will not pose much of an obstacle for favourite Music Magnate coming out from the seventh barrier. Bjorn Baker’s 5YO bay gelding is priced at $2.40 on Sportsbet. This horse is one difficult one to handicap, as he is the picture displayed in the dictionary for anyone who seeks the definition of inconsistency.
He has seven wins and five placings from 16 starts, but he is capable of winning the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 in May 2016 on the one hand, beating Azkadellia on that occasion, only to back with 16th on his next outing at the Stradbroke Handicap in June.
Takedown is second favourite at $3.30, with Tumbler third at $7.00.
The Group 3 Gunsynd Classic follows, where Dreams Aplenty will jump from barrier two at $2.00, with only possibly Spring Tycoon a threat at $4.00.
