David Hayes Reunites Sheidel with Sensational Jock Moreira
Thoroughbred trainer David Hayes has successfully lured the Hong Kong based superstar rider Joao Moreira to ride in South Australia during next month’s Adelaide Festival Of Racing.
Should that name not seem sufficiently Hong Kong-ish, it is because Moreira hails from Brazil, but plies his trade in Hong Kong, where the most talented of the talented go to squeeze the best financial compensation they can from their occupation.
Some view Moreira as the best rider in the world, which is subjective and debatable in the minds of many, but nonetheless, he will ride Hayes’ top mare Sheidel at Morphettville in the Group 1 UBET Classic, aka. the Robert Sangster Stakes on Oaks Day May 6.
Sheidel managed second in last year’s UBET Classic and went on to post impressive results going forward, including a runner-up in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes. She earned her first Group 1 win in the Oakleigh Plate at Flemington if February, with Moreira doing the riding.
Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig will also employ Moreira in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks, so he will have plenty of saddle time to show for his sojourn away from Honkers.
Moreira lays claim to having the world record for riding eight winners from eight rides in a nine-race meeting in Singapore back in 2013. So far as we know, all eight of those horses had four legs, in case Moreira is harbouring thoughts of invincibility.
