Darren Weir Says Do Not Overlook Black Heart Bart in Cox Plate
As is to be expected, Black Heart Bart trainer Darren Weir feels that not only Hartnell, but his horse as well, has the opportunity to beat Winx in the Cox Plate.
As the clock winds down toward the jump, however, the bookmakers do not seem to share Weir’s whistling-past-the-graveyard opinion.
Winx continues to shorten as the Group 1 Cox Plate approaches, so those punters who took her last week when she was over $2.00 should be feeling pretty smug when they see her at $1.80 early on the day prior to the race.
Hartnell has move the other direction and will now pay $3.70 for a win, according to the expert handicappers at Bookmaker.com.
Bart, meanwhile, has four others between him and Winx, but Weir feels that Bart had a chance in the Caulfield Stakes, leading with 600 m and not surrendering to the mighty mare until there was just 200 m to go.
Regarding his Cox Plate strategy, Weir was quoted saying, “I know it’s going to be tough and it’s a great race, but strange things happen in a race.”
Yes. And if wishes were horses.
In this case, they are. Only a monumentally strange thing happening in the Cox Plate will see Bart ahead of Winx, even though Bart has three recent Group 1 wins, but none at Cox Plate length.
