Co-Favourite Houtzen Leads Field for Magic Million 2YO Classic Win
Houtzen led all the way in the 2YO Magic Million Classic over 1200 metres at Gold Coast, giving the Queensland locals much about which to cheer. She was out in front within a hundred metres of the start, winning by half a length over Chauffeur, with Madeenaty over three lengths back from Houtzen.
Houtzen ran from the 16th barrier and the wide draw caused some indecisiveness regarding tactics of the part of trainer Toby Edmonds, but he ultimately put the matter into the capable hands of jockey Jeff Lloyd, who had to do little but partake of completely unencumbered scenery in front of him.
Lloyd obviously chose the right strategy in permitting Houtzen to follow her typical pattern of running from the head and not taking a sit in order to let the field develop. Houtzen may have been tiring at the end, but she can now rest as long as necessary past the post.
Front running had worked in the filly’s other two starts and it will probably work again in her March target of the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes over 1200 metres at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney.
Capitalist notched a Millions/Slipper double last year. Phelan completed the feat in 2009, and before that was Dance Hero in 2004.
