Chris Waller Eclipses $30 Million in 2015 – 2016 Season
Every little bit helps, at least that is what trainer Chris Waller might say when he recently established a new mark for earning by a trainer in one season when his horse Loiret won the Grange Maiden Plate at Gosford.
The $15,325 Loiret took in for the race pushed Waller over $30 million in an Australian racing season. He made it in just under the wire, with just over a week remaining in the 2015 – 2016 season.
Waller has Winx to thank for almost $6 million of that tally. She was undefeated during the season, bringing in $5,627,500 from seven races, putting her just shy of being able to call herself the Million Dollar Mare.
The closest pursuer to Waller is Darren Weir with over $21 million.
Comparing the two men shows the truth of the adage that it is not only how many times you win, but also what you win that matters. Weir set the record for wins in a season with 337 – ½, 65 – ½ more wins than Waller, but despite winning $3.8 million for the remarkable win of the Melbourne Cup by Prince of Penzance, he still finds himself in a $9 million dollar hole compared to Waller for prize money.
Waller won 39 fewer times last season, but still managed a tally of almost $27 million.
