Caulfield Stakes Could Be Ideal Lead-Up to Cox Plate for Some
The Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000 m) this weekend has a field of 12, unlike 2016, when only Black Heart Bart and He Or She were willing to take on Winx.
Since the super mare is biding her time following the recent win in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes in preparation for her attempt at a fourth W S Cox Plate on October 27, Caulfield had plenty of Thoroughbreds lining up for the $1 million WFA event.
Those looking to have a punt will find the bookmakers listing the Caufield Stakes as the Ladbrokes Stakes.
Chris Waller, without a runner in The Everest on his home track, has the Caufield Stakes second favourite in a horse whose name we forgot… wait, Unforgotten is the name. Unforgotten will come out of the fifth barrier, currently at $5.00 on BetEasy, which should compensate for Waller’s other runner, D’Aregento, running from the outside as the $4.40 favourite. Unforgotten, at 56 kg, will have the lightest burden of the field; a 1 kg advantage on Sedanzer, 2 kg on D’Argento and 3 kg on the rest of the field.
If past history is any indicator of future performance, this could be a Waller procession, even if it is just the two he will field.
The third line goes to Benbatl from the rail at $6.00 for the win. The Goldolphin entrant is prepared by Saeed Bin Suroor of Newmarket and has three Group 1 wins in his last four starts.
Humidor is a $7.50 chance according to BetEasy and he has drawn well and will jump from the lucky number seven barrier.
There could be a Benbatl – Winx Cox Plate showdown in the offing, although that is pure speculation at this time, but it would supply a unique opportunity to see what Winx can do against one of Great Britain’s better horses.
The others in the field that have a decent chance are Homesman and Night’s Watch, both $9.50, along with Tosen Basil and the Cliffsofmoher, both $12.00.
