Caulfield Carnival Offers Quality Autumn Racing
There is big autumn racing on the card for Saturday at Caulfield.
Nine races, eight Group 3 or above, will ensure that there are plenty of quality on display for punters to earn a few dollars.
If we had to pick a highlight on the day, we would have to go with the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200 m), as racing punters seem to be drawn to races for two-year-olds.
A field of 14 will take to the track, led by Loving Gaby, even though she has drifted the slightest bit since the markets went up, from $4.50 to her current Ladbrokes quote of $5. She has had just the one race, but perhaps having I Am Invincible for a sire inspires confidence.
The second line belongs to Lyre ($6.50), drawn well in the fifth barrier and winner of her last two. She also boasts a strong lineage in Lonhro.
Two-year-old races are hard to handicap, so the Blue Diamond always dangles a divine dividend.
The weight-for-age Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400 m) is wide open, too.
Alizee is the top line at $2.60. Brave Smash ($7) is back to defend the win from 2018 and Hartnell seems a valid chance for another shot at glory, secure in knowing that Winx is loafing in Sydney.
The next to last race of the meeting is the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100 m), with a field headed by Nature Strip at $2.20. Ladbrokes currently shows 22 horses turning out, so the winner might need a bit of racing luck.
Another in the field with a legitimate chance is Eduardo ($9.50), but he is almost as wide as can be, but the five-year-old’s form reveals that he has never failed to place, which sounds impressive at first glance, but he has only jumped five times. He won the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint this October past.
