Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Race Day Offers Nine Events
Nine races, beginning with four sprints, followed by three middle distance events and concluding with two races for the staying variety make for one big day of racing in Darwin today at Fanny Bay.
Six-year-old Global Icon seems well-poised coming out of barrier five in the Fulton Hogan Handicap, even though he, along with The Hummel, has top weight. Spoilspot and Street Royale also have good prospects.
The second race is the Wolf Blass ‘Montgomerie’ Lightning Plate, where local horses are well represented. Girls Away seems to be favoured.
Race three is the Schweppes Handicap where the money seems to be following Cadman. The four-year-old gelding gets top weight of 60 kg.
Twelve horses should start race four, the Mantra Darwin Trobis Handicap, where five-year-old mare Sparkling Vixen from SA is approaching the race as though it is her Grand Final.
Race five is the Domain GMNT Handicap, where a field of 10 should be headed by Gallant Express or Senor Juez.
Next up is the Ladbrokes Handicap and it seems like a good race is on tap here, with Heirdom, Kilim, Mavericks and Lead Husson all deserving attention.
Race seven is the 1600 m Designer Kitchens BMNT Handicap, where Abu Dhabi has a strong following.
The GBI Racing Handicap should belong to Quantum Dot with Tommy Berry steering.
The feature is race nine, the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup, which offers a worthy field of competitors set on denying local favourite Finke from securing the Derby/Cup double.
