Capitalist Fourth in Group 3 San Domenico Stakes
Everyone’s money was backing Capitalist in Saturday’s Group 3 San Domenico Stakes, but he loafed the 1100 metres of Rosehill turf and let three others finish ahead of him.
One of his trainers, Peter Snowden, expressed doubt over the prospect of Capitalist competing against the same horses under the same set weight plus penalty conditions in the Run To The Rose at the end of the month. Snowden is hopeful that Capitalist will give a stronger showing when he gets to the Golden Rose at set weights, although there is no absolute certainty at this point that the Golden Slipper Stakes and Magic Millions winner will jump in the Golden Rose.
By winning the San Domenico, Star Turn moved up the market for the Golden Rose to third favourite. The Rosehill based Hawkes triumvirate has been bringing Star Turn along gradually. He ran sixth in the Golden Slipper won by Capitalist in March and fifth in the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield in his first Group 1 outing.
Yankee Rose is being prepared to make the Golden Rose her first up of the new season. She ran just behind Capitalist in the Golden Slipper and won the Group 1 Sires Produce at Randwick in April.
