Brazilian Jockey Moreira Rides 8 Winners For Second Time
It would be logical to think that jockey Joao “Magic Man” Moreira would let it all ride on fortune on Honk Kong’s Sha Tin Racecourse after riding eight winners on one recent Sunday night, but horseracing logic is about as oxymoronic a phrase as we can devise, so Moreira instead will head for Melbourne and Flemington to try his luck there Saturday.
He will be one busy hoop at headquarters, riding in eight of the nine Super Saturday races on the card, including the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap, where he will steer Flying Artie, and the Australian Cup, where he will be working for Goldolphin aboard Tally.
Moreira is not one to shy from travel, as he is coming back from Hong Kong after riding recently at Caulfield.
His other Flemington rides, assuming all goes according to Hoyle, will be Justice Glory, Fragonard, Super Fun, Circular, Cannysescent and Magnatti.
The only other known time when a jockey has surpassed eight wins at one meeting was when Eddie Castro (who?) rode nine winners at Calder (where?) in Florida in 2005.
Moreira’s eight-win haul at Sha Tin was a repeat for him, as he managed the same feat riding in his home country of Brazil.
Moreira won the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate when he last graced the turf at Caulfield.
