Black Heart Bart Favoured in 2016 Group 1 Underwood Stakes

Darren Weir plans on having four horses in the upcoming Group 1 Underwood Stakes and Black Heart Bart will be one of those four, despite concerns from some observers that Bart is not capable of running the 1800 m distance at Caulfield.

The reason for the concern is that Bart was run down by Palentino in the final metres of the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington.

Weir dismissed the concerns, saying that if Palentino had not been in the race, Black Heart Bart would have won easily. Brad Rawiller will be do doing the riding in the Underwood, as Damien Oliver missed the Makybe Diva due to suspension.

Weir will also have his improbable Melbourne Cup winner from last year, Prince of Penzance in the race, ridden by John Allen. Weir’s other two will be Signoff with Harry Coffey aboard and Howard Be Thy Name paired with Mark Zahra.

The weight-for-age Underwood Stakes has had notable names such as Heroic, Phar Lap, Ajax, Tobin Bronze, Northerly and Octagonal as winners in the past. Mourinho was the 2015 winner. The race is viewed as a reasonable guide to the Cox Plate.

Black Heart Bart is favoured by a nice margin over Lucia Valentina, with Sportsbet pricing the former at $2.80 and the latter at $4.40.
