Big Meeting at Caulfield on Saturday Features Three Group 1s
The attention of thoroughbred racing fans will be directed to Caulfield racecourse on the southeast side of the Melbourne CBD Saturday coming when the track enjoys its moment in the sun for the autumn racing carnival.
Three Group 1s will feature on the racing card for the day.
Those are the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200 m) for the two-year-olds, the Futurity Stakes (1400 m) for those who prefer weight-for-age racing and the Oakleigh Plate (1100 m) for open handicap racers.
Black Caviar fans may have the chance to see Prince of Caviar take to the turf for the first time provided the Hawkes triumvirate of Michael, Wayne and John actually run him. Prince of Caviar is nominated, but as Black Caviar has not enjoyed much success as a breeder, the bookmakers have the horse quoted at odds that are almost inconceivably long, $301.
Black Caviar’s first foal, Oscietra, has only run three races since being born in September of 2014, winning only once on the synthetic surface of the Geelong Racing Club back in August of 2017. Her first and only outing at Flemington saw her run ninth out of 13, so it is still unknown if Black Caviar can produce a runner deserving of being in the conversation with her.
Brave Smash is leading the betting for the Futurity Stakes, followed closely by Tosen Stardom and Mighty Boss. New Zealand’s Humidor $6.50) is fourth in the wagering with the final field and the barrier draw yet to be announced.
The field for the Oakleigh Plate looks to be a strong one, provided that the field contains all the top nominations, which include Russian Revolution, She Will Reign and Booker. Catchy and Snitty Kitty could also figure in the outcome.
Chautauqua is a surprise, last-minute entry for the Oakleigh Plate and if he jumps, he will carry the 58 kg topweight.
Also on the card for the Caulfield meeting Saturday are the Group 2s St. George Stakes, the Autumn Classic and the Angus Armanasco Stakes.
Group 3 races will be the Zeditave Stakes and the Mannersism Stakes.
