Big Duke to Get Second Chance at Rescheduled Sydney Cup

The reply of the 2017 Sydney Cup is scheduled for this Saturday at Royal Randwick. The 3200 m Group 1 stayer race was declared a no-race when Almoonqith fell on the sloppy track, which had been slow to begin with and no doubt in even worse shape by the time the Sydney Cup’s slot on the race card came up.

Goldolphin had a bit of a scare with their English import, Polarisation. That horse was first over the line in the first running, but was later found to have an issue with a fetlock joint that necessitated X-rays.

Polarisation also had an ultrasound, which seemed to clear him, and his trackwork Monday past seemed to show him running free, but he will be examined by Dr. Craig Suann, Racing NSW chief veterinarian, before the horse will be cleared to run the Sydney Cup replay.

Goldolphin stable spokesperson James Ferguson said it was business as usual for Polarisation and that the horse had been sticking to his normal practice schedule.

Racing NSW and the ATC are looking for some additional horses to fill the field. Eleven of the original starters are again nominated. It would appear at this point that Lasqueti Spirit, Self Sense, Harlem and Rock On will participate.

Big Duke remains the favourite at $3.50 TAB fixed, followed by two Goldolphin runners, Penglai Pavilion at $4.60 and Polarisation carries a $6.00 quote.
