Azkadellia Taking on Doomben 10,000 as Lead Up to Stradbroke Handicap
Caulfield based trainer Ciaron Maher feels that a firm Doomben track represents to threat to Azkadellia in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 sprint.
Based on the probable field, the decision by Maher to chase a Doomben 10,000 victory followed by the Stradbroke Handicap in June when Eagle Farm takes centre stage for what remains of the 2015 – 2016 racing season.
Azkadellia ran down the field in her last race when she won the Group 1 Queen of the Turf over 1600 m at set weights at Rosehill on a soft track. She has finished no worse than third since February of 2016 whilst being steered by top jockeys Damien Oliver, Brett Prebble and Glen Boss.
Azkadellia has a history of doing well on soft courses, so the firm conditions projected for Brisbane were of some degree of concern. According to Maher, though, firm is Brisbane is not as firm as firm is at The Heath or at Sydney’s Rosehill.
She trialed at Eagle Farm as part of her preparation for the Stradbroke Handicap, which is her main target, and her trainer feels that the newly renovated course is more forgiving and well suited to her.
Azkadellia is the current favourite over Black Heart Bart for the Stradbroke as well as the Doomben 10,000.
