Almandin and Other Williams Runners Out of Zipping Classic
Punters will not have the opportunity to back 2016 Melbourne Cup sinner Almandin in the upcoming Zipping Classic (Sandown Classic), the 2400 m Group 2 race that for all intents and purposes, belongs to Lloyd Williams, based on the number of winners he has fielded in the last decade or so, since Williams has decided to save Almandin for freshening with a spell in anticipation of the next campaign in Sydney.
Yesterday, we reported that Williams would have four horses in the field for the Zipping, but the latest information confirms that not only will Almandin be absent, but Williams also intends to spell Bondi Beach and Assign.
That leaves only Gallante to represent Williams, but the most current information suggests that not even Gallante’s participation is an absolute certainty.
Fifth place Melbourne Cup finisher Who Shot Thebarman has moved to the favourite’s position for the Zipping. The eight-year-old Kiwi bay gelding of Chris Waller’s operation won the race last year and is currently priced at $3.60, 20 cents ahead of So Si Bon, Robbie Laing’s young black colt and like Waller’s horse, another Kiwi product.
Goldolphin plans to enter Big Orange, Beautiful Romance and Secret Number in the race.
