2016 Melbourne Cup Provides Thrilling Race to the Post

Pre-race favourite Hartnell acquitted himself admirably in the 156th running of the Melbourne Cup, beaten in the end by Almandin and Heartbreak City.

Second-favourite Jameka could manage no better than 15th.

Hartnell was left four lengths back of the winner Almandin and Heartbreak City.

An interesting connection with this year’s race and 2015 is that Almandin’s jockey, Kerrin McEvoy, is the brother-in-law of last year’s winning jockey, Michelle Payne.

Flemington will run the Group 1 Crown Oaks, the Emirates Stakes and the Group 1 and the VRC Sprint Classic to wrap up spring Group 1 racing. From there, the rest of the month is quiet as far as top quality racing is concerned, save for the Group 1 Railway Stakes and Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot in WA. The following week, Ascot has the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic, which is the only Group 1 race in December.
