2016 Kentucky Derby Favours Unbeaten Nyquist
The last big month of Australian thoroughbred racing will have punters looking to Morphettville and Doomben for Group 1 events, and then things quiet down for a while.
Meanwhile, thoroughbred racing in the States, what is left of it, at any rate, goes into high gear.
May 7 in the civilised world, May 8 down-under, the Run for the Roses, aka. The Kentucky Derby would be an excellent opportunity to have some brekkie and watch the race live from Churchill Downs.
Judging from a quick check of some of the Aussie online bookmakers, however, it might be hard to get a punt on until the day of the race.
At any rate, unbeaten three-year-old Nyquist is the 3 -1 favourite, but he should be shorter except for the fact that he is rather boring to watch. He does not run from the front; neither does he produce dazzling stretch runs or fast times. He simply wins.
Number 2 favourite is Exaggerator at 8 – 1. He has a hall of fame trainer and a hall of fame jockey and will start from post 11, two spots inside Nyquist.
The race is on dirt, covers a mile and a quarter (about 2000 m) and awards the winner with about $1.7 million USD.
