2014 Melbourne Cup Winner Protectionist Heading to Europe
Protectionist might be a good term to describe the cautious approach of the connections of the horse of that name.
After winning the 2014 Melbourne Cup in easy fashion, Protectionist has raced just 10 times, winning barrier trial in early 2015 and finishing in a tie in August 2015 in another barrier trial at Newcastle. His four races since then have resulted in nothing better than an eighth and that was in a field of nine.
He showed poorly in October 2015 in the Caulfield Cup and has not run since.
Examining Protectionist’s record, it is obvious that he does his best work on soft tracks. He has never won on the firm turf that is often a feature of Australian tracks and seven of his 18 races have been under soft conditions. With five wins and four placings to his credit, his connections have picked the right spots and the six-year-old has earned over $4 million. Other than the Melbourne Cup win, he seems decidedly overmatched at Group 1 level.
He is scheduled to be shipped to Germany to find forgiving European surfaces on which to run, which given his history, seems like a wise decision for a horse in the autumn of his career.
