17 Consecutive for Winx Elicits Sympathy for Hartnell
It almost seems patently unfair that simply on the basis of gender, Hartnell had to lug an extra two kilos around Randwick in his futile pursuit of Winx in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday, but by the same token, it is highly unlikely that he could have matched her pace even if the weights had been equal.
Not only is the might mare making her connections proud and wealthy, she is drawing crowds not seen at Randwick since the grandstand redevelopment four years ago. Not even Black Caviar matched her in terms of crowd appeal, with almost 27,000 turning out to see Winx do what she typically does-leave everything in her wake.
The Australian Turf Club is also counting the ducats coming in from having Winx on the meeting card.
Hopefully, some punters who occasionally do us the favour of following our musings here took our suggestion of getting behind her when she was offered at $1.15, as she shortened to $1.12 by the jump, although that was a surprisingly better bargain, as we had anticipated her going for $1.05.
Winx won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes by more than five lengths from Hartnell, and we find ourselves reminiscing for the days of our youth, when we occasionally felt sympathy for Wiley Coyote and wished that just once, he could catch the Roadrunner.
