The Port Augusta Racecourse is operated by the Port Augusta Racing Club.
The Club was formed in late 1881 when the Port Augusta and Flinders Jockey Club was inaugurated. In 2011 the club celebrates 130 years since racing began in the then outback shipping port of Port Augusta.
The Port Augusta Racecourse is located at the head of the Spencer Gulf and is the apex of the triangle formed by the three Northern cities of Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla.
The majestic Flinders Ranges provide a spectacular backdrop to the Port Augusta racecourse and its facilities make it a premier site for racing.
It has operated continuously apart from periods during the two world wars.
It has become a tradition to hold an annual big race meeting where visitors stay in Port Augusta for a week or more.
The Port Augusta Cup is still held annually in July. The Port Augusta Cup has a race distance of 2250 metres.
The Port Augusta Racecourse is a sand track that is comprised of three different grades of sand with either oil or water used as a binding agent. The Port Augusta Racecourse is 2,100 metres in circumference and has a 400 metre long chute that joins the course proper at the 1,200 metre start.
