Inverell is nestled in a picturesque valley beside the Macintyre River.
The town had its beginnings when Colin and Rosana Ross arrived in August 1853, to start a store for the settlers who had moved into the district during 1839-40.

The Inverell Racecourse has a circumference of 1600 metres and has a home straight 400 metres long. The course is a specialist track consisting of many turns and has a long home straight. Inside barriers are an advantage for 1000 to 1200 metre starts.
