BlueBet Bookmaker Review
With their wide product selection and diverse promotions, BlueBet is an Australian bookmaker worth checking. Read on to learn more
BlueBet is an Australian owned bookmaking company run by CEO Michael Sullivan and based at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney Australia.
Sullivan has more than three decades of professional experience as a bookmaker in the Australian industry. He began his career as a rails bookie and has worked his way up the ranks before becoming one of the early pioneers of internet betting in Australia. Today, his company brings together a competitive team of bookmaking industry professionals who together make BlueBet one of Australia’s leading bookmaking operations. Join BlueBet >>>
BlueBet’s online services are available all day every day via their website, iPhone and Android mobile apps, and through their telephone call centre. And for those of us who might prefer the personal touch, you can always find Mike working the Randwick metropolitan meetings every Saturday during the racing season. And why wouldn't you head on down to the Randwick races if and when you're in old Sydney town?
A Wide Product Selection
BlueBet offers bookmaking markets on all Australian and New Zealand horse racing events as well as for many racetracks around the world. You can also access literally thousands of sports markets both locally and globally including the AFL, NRL, EPL, NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, A-League, Cricket, Tennis and Golf markets.
BlueBet Sports Betting Products Include:
- American Football
- Australian Rules
- Ice Hockey
- Motor Racing
- Rugby League
- Rugby Union
BlueBet does not support quite as many sports as some of the other bookies do, but it is easy to see how some punters might view this as a benefit, while those who are interested in some of the more esoteric sports codes might be inclined to look elsewhere.
BlueBet offers regular and diverse promotions including sign up bonuses, owners reward, Multi refund offers and BlueBoost (see mobile app section below). You can check the website for their current promotions, as these change frequently.
Here is what we found on our most recent visit:
Punters placing their very first online racing bet with BlueBet qualify for racing bonus bets of up to $100. All that is required is a bet of $10 or more. Bets of $10 would receive a $10 bonus bet, while those funding for $100 or more would receive the maximum $100 bonus bet. The bonus bet is subject to a 1x turnover requirement at odds of $1.50 or better, a common industry practice. The deposit turnover requirement is also 1x.
The BlueBoost promotion offers an odds boost on certain races. We saw that BlueBet had chosen a mid-week meeting at Randwick for the first race of the meeting. This promotion encourages punters to look at races other than the big features. This is an ongoing promotion, as well as a one-off.
They also had a similar promotion for greyhound racing.
Another promotion is Protest Payout. BlueBet is not the only bookie to offer this, but it is certainly nice to see it available from BlueBet. In short, for all Australian Thoroughbred meetings, punters will be paid as though they picked the winner, but the horse is subsequently relegated due to a successful protest lodged against it by one of the other runners.
One fairly unique feature of BlueBet is that they maintain a page that details prior promotions. It gives some insight as to what might be coming down the pipeline in the future.
The BlueBet mobile app is available on both the Apple and Android platforms and has a good number of favourable user reviews. Depending on your mobile connection, it is usually quite responsive with good ease of use, reflecting the excellent BlueBet website functionality.
Our favourite is the mobile version of the website. It is easiest to navigate in landscape mode, or it was for us, at least.
Aside from the usual, such as placing a sport or racing bet, single or multi, parlay or Quaddie, with live updates — the BlueBet app also offers extra functionality with BlueBoost, QuickBet, Blackbook & markets such as Favourite vs Field, Inside vs Out and a lot more:
- Mobile Social Betting
- Connect with your mates
- Share bets with your mates
- Rate and share form
- Share wins with your mates
They also claim that the BlueBet app is currently the only app in Australia that offers a social sharing function that allows you to invite friends to your account, and share rate, form, tips and bets on specific races.
You can also, of course, just chat! BlueBet's Social Betting Platform is leading the way in this important mobile market sector. They are not resting on their laurels, but actively developing the platform as can be seen with their new offering in BlueBoost.
BlueBoost lets you increase your racing odds on a fixed odds Australian thoroughbred racing bet, just the once per day.
This interesting feature is available now on the BlueBet mobile platform as well as on their website, and they’re already working on rolling it out for more events in the future.
While the future almost certainly belongs to the mobile platform, the BlueBet website is where the online services started and today this well-established website is very modern and feature-packed as you might expect.
The website is mobile responsive and loads nice and quickly even at 480px wide resolutions. It looks great on an iPad, but you would still definitely want to download the enhanced mobile version for smaller screens. The navigation is intuitive and should be easy to use even for a betting newbie.
The whole site has a very modern, modular almost game-like feel to it that intelligently packs a lot of functionality and information into its graphic user interface, with a thin header and dual left (listing racing and sports markets) and right (promotions) sidebar menus.
Select a general market in the left-hand menu and all the current events for it are listed in boxes cascading down the page centre. Selecting an event will open up various betting options and markets for it such as the usual racing 'win and place', or 'quinella' and so on, as well as 'Quick Multi' or 'Odds vs Evens'. Selecting your betting type will then prompt the right-hand sidebar to become your own Betting Slip. Place your bets and hit the big green ‘Place Bets’ button and you’re away. It’s really that easy! Odds and Markets
BlueBet does not offer the staggering number of markets some of the other bookies offer. We know that the number of markets increases as an event nears, but while we typically see hundreds of markets per AFL fixture with some bookies, BlueBet is in the area of 50 markets.
Fifty markets will be plenty for most punters and even those who place dozens or more bets on a weekly basis might find BlueBet entirely adequate.
As for odds, the online wagering industry has blurred the differences between bookmakers, so BlueBet is competitive across all racing and sports codes. Shopping for the best prices is a big part of the entertainment value of online punting, so we always use this as an argument for multiple bookie memberships.
Log In Or Sign Up
Signing up is a seamless exercise as all you need to provide is your name, address, birthdate (18+ only), and a credit/debit card. Within the next 30 days, Australian government regulations will also require you to provide BlueBet with 100 points of identification such as a passport or birth certificate as well as a driver’s license, Medicare card etc.
As soon as you’ve signed up, you’ll be prompted to ‘Add your mates’ and then shown various handy hints such as the location in the right sidebar of your three 'Activity', 'Tips & Alerts', and 'Pending Bets' button icons.
Quite often the blog section of far too many websites can feel a bit neglected, but the BlueBet Blog seems to be updated regularly and has a professional news site and graphic feel to it as well.
There are Sports and Racing sub-headings dealing with current events such as the 2018 World Cup match between Australia and Denmark. Here, BlueBet correspondent Matt Abrahams gives a very nicely detailed overview of the game, the players, their history and a prediction with a selection of possible bets. It's very nicely done and just makes us want to get in there with a bet asap!
Secure And Responsible Betting
Once you've signed on, added your credit / debit card and authenticated your identity, you can also rest easy knowing that your money will be secure and that an established and reputable bookmaker will honour your bets.
At BlueBet, they take their betting business very seriously, follow responsible gambling codes of practice, and secure betting procedures such as:
- BlueBet is a certified member of the NSW Bookmaker's Co-operative that acts as a guarantor for the payment of any bets you might place.
- All telephone bets and customer service conversations are also recorded on a government-approved voice logging device.
- All internet bets can be monitored live by the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.
- BlueBet is an approved betting provider for the Australian Rugby, Australian Tennis, the Football Federation of Australia, PGA Australia, Cricket Australia and the NRL.
Payment and Withdrawal Methods
Blutbet provides the usual secure payment options using BPay, Poli Internet Banking and MasterCard or Visa credit/debit card services.
Withdrawing winnings is one area where we found BlueBet slightly lacking compared to some of the other bookies.
For online support, there’s a live chat button on the website as well as the mobile app. Immediate support is available should you have any problems with placing a bet or questions about the website and BlueBet services in general.
You can also, of course, go old school and call them on the telephone, and not just for the customer service call centre but also to place your bets on either the races or a sport of your choice. Just like the old days!
For less urgent matters that might require more detail and perhaps a written record, there’s always email of course.
Some punters might appreciate that BlueBet is Australian owned and operated, while others with a more mercenary and less nationalistic approach might not give a hoot.
Many would like to see more funding and withdrawal options, especially the latter, but banking is not something on which we place a lot of value, as we have yet to find a bookie that would refuse our deposit.
Still others will appreciate the influence of founder Michael Sullivan, as his reputation lends gravitas to BlueBet.
The website is entirely functional and stays out of the way, except for some slideshow offerings that thankfully disappear once you get inside the website to the meat and potato sections.
We might like to see chat support, support of any kind, for that matter, extended to 24 hours, but that could come along at any time and be mostly unnoticed, save for those punters who chase international markets.
All the racing and major sports codes are well covered and there is nothing we found on the BlueBet website or other sources that would cause us to advise steering clear of this bookie.
BlueBet would easily suffice for the occasional punter. Newer punters will have few issues enrolling, funding and placing bets. For the professional or semi-professional punter who makes a lot of wagers, BlueBet would be a nice addition to a list of active bookie memberships.
