Winners and Past Results of the Black Caviar Lightning.
Hosted by the Victoria Racing Club at the Flemington race track is the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning run over 1000 metres held in Autumn mid-February.
The race was originally named the Lightning Stakes but was renamed in 2013 to its present name in honour of the Champion Mare Black Caviar. Seven of Black Caviar's 22 victories have been at Flemington including five Group Ones.
The Black Caviar Lightning is a weight for age sprint race and is worth $500,000 in prize money.
The Group 2 Australia Stakes held earlier at Moonee Valley Racecourse under the same conditions is a good lead up race to to the Black Caviar Lightning. Other races leading up to this race is the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes over 1100 metres and also the Carlyon Cup over 1400 metres held at Caulfield Racecourse a week earlier. These races are usually a good form guide for racing punters.
Horses who run well in the Black Caviar Lightning may then go on and try out in the $1,000,000 Group 1 Newmarket Handicap over 1100 metres at Flemington Racecourse in March. Champion mare Black Caviar won both these Group Races in 2011.
The Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley in March and the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield on Blue Diamond Stakes day may be other races that runners may race in after the Black Caviar Lightning.
Recent winners of the race include Black Caviar 2011 and 2012, Miss Andretti 2007, Apache Cat 2008, and Scenic Blast in 2009.
The first Lightning Stakes was held in 1955 as a principal race which was won by Gay Vista. From 1980 through to 1986 it was a Group 2 event.
Since 1987 the Black Caviar Lightning has been a Group 1 race.
