The Goodwood Handicap. Winners and Past Results.
The South Australian Jockey Club hosts a number of Group 1 races during the Adelaide autumn racing carnival which includes The Goodwood Handicap.
The 1200 metre sprint race is held at Morphettville Racecourse under set weight plus penalty conditions in May.
The Goodwood Handicap is the richest sprint race in autumn in Adelaide with $500,000 in prize money. Also held on Goodwood Handicap Day are the Group 3 The Jansz, SA Oaks, and the RA Lee Stakes. The race attracts a strong line of above average sprinters where the set weights and penalty conditions favour the better performing horses.
The 1100 M Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes held at Morphettville in April may serve as a handy form guide. Horses may also make their way after a run in the 1100 M Group 3 DC McKay Stakes at Morphettville in April. The 1500 M Group 1 George Ryder Stakes held at the Rosehill Track in Sydney in April may also be one of the lead up races. Although it hasn't recently proved to be a good form guide, the 1200 M Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes held at Randwick Racecourse a fortnight earlier may also be one of the warm up races.
The Goodwood Handicap began as a principal race in 1881 and has seen a number of notable gallopers etch their name on the trophy. It remained a principal race until 1980 when it was granted Group 1 status. It remained a handicap event until 2007 and has been a set weight & penalty race since then.
Among the recent notable winners are Euclase in 1992, Sword in 1996, Spectrum in 1998, Bomber Bill in 2003 followed by Super Elegant and Glamour Puss in succession. Among the wily sprinters to add The Goodwood Handicap to his credit was Takeover Target in 2009. Let Go Thommo was another classy galloper to win in 2007.
