Schweppes Stakes
Winners and Past Results for the Schweppes Stakes
The Schweppes Stakes is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 2 Australian horse race for horses aged three years old and over under weight for age conditions.
Every year Mooney Valley Racing Club plays host to the Schweppes Stakes. The weight for age race has some of the best sprinters stamp their authority on the tracks over a distance of 1200 M.
Held during the Spring Racing Carnival at the Moonee Valley Racecourse, the Schweppes Stakes carries prize money worth $300,000 and a $5,000 trophy.
The event is held on a hectic day for race goers along with the Group I WS Cox Plate, making it the perfect combination for some big punting. The Schweppes Stakes was originally known as the AJ Moir Stakes and Schweppervesence Stakes and was 200 M shorter.
Over the years, the Schweppes Stakes has had some of the best sprinters in history pick up the trophy. With Me scored a double in 1990 and 91 as well. Other horses that were comfortable on the tight Moonee Valley race track include Schillaci in 1992, Falvelon in 2002, Apache Cat in 2009, and Black Caviar in 2010.
Formerly known as the AJ Moir Stakes, the first race was held in 1976 was a principal race won by Scamanda over a 1000 M.
The Schweppes Stakes was upgraded to Group 2 in 1979 where punters witnessed an exciting duel between The Judge and Grey Sapphire, which ended in a dead heat.
The Group 2 Schillaci Stakes is a good guide where many place getters make it to the AJ Moir Stakes. Next in line are the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington Racecourse and Myer Classic, where all eyes are on the placers from the AJ Moir Stakes. Black Caviar who won the AJ Moir Stakes in 2010 by 5 ½ lengths, continued her winning streak at Flemington in the Patinack on Emirates Day, and became the world champion sprinter.
One of the best sprinters to win the Schweppes Stakes was Manikato, a champion thoroughbred Australian race horse that won many stakes and Group 1 races. The gelding was only second to Kingston Town to win $1 million in stakes.
The large purse attracts a fine crop of sprinters and their trainers who often move on to bigger wins in the following seasons. Horses to make a Group 2 Schillaci / Schweppes Stakes double include Show No Emotion, Magic Music, Falvelon, Mistegic, and Spinning Hill, all between 1998 and 2002, followed by Black Caviar in 2010. Punters witnessed a dead heat between Clay Hero and Good Old Ted at the 1989 edition of the stakes.
