The T J Smith is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Australian horse race for 2 year olds run at set weights. Free $200 Bet

It is contested over a distance of 1600 metres and is held annually at Eagle Farm Racecourse  in Brisbane during the Winter Racing Carnival.

Prize money for the TJ Smith is worth $500,000.

The TJ Smith is named after legendary Sydney trainer Tommy Smith and the race has grown to become an elite race for two-year-olds during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. It is the final group race for 2yo gallopers.

T.J. Smith was first run in 1893 as the Claret Stakes.

It began as a principal race run over six furlongs but was increased to seven furlongs in 1905. The T.J. Smith was not held between 1942 and 1945 but recommenced in 1946 under the same conditions. Nearly a decade later The T J Smith distance was increased to eight furlongs before changing to the metric conversion of 1600m in 1973. Not long after in 1980 the event reached Group 2 status before finally being elevated to its current Group 1 status in 1985.

The Group 2 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) held one week earlier at the same track is the best guide to this event.

2011 The TJ Smith

Benfica enjoyed a lovely ride in the early stages settling on the rails just in behind pre-race favourite Hot Snitzel. When Hot Snitzel moved off the fence in the straight, Benfica took the gap and powered away for an impressive win. Hot Snitzel held on for second, comfortably clear of Playtime.
