Thames racecourse is home to the Thames Jockey Club which holds one meeting
per year in January. Located at the entrance to the picturesque Kauearnga
Valley in Thames on the Coromandal Peninsula, this is the perfect summer venue
with a picnic atmosphere ,"No suits or ties required'. The Coromandel Peninsula
is one of the largest holiday destinations in New Zealand and Thames is central
to all the holiday areas and is the largest town on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Turn right from the main road into Banks Street (Toyota Car Factory on left, BP
Service station on right), take second turn on right on to Parawai Road and
follow this road to the racecourse.
Thames Races -
The feature event is the $30,000 Thames Cup, an Open Handicap race. Overall,
the meeting has $140,000 in stakes on offer. The meeting is part of
'Destination Summer' ensuring it will be day to remember. Entertainment
includes "Holiday Fashion in the Field", free children's entertainment
including rides, magic shows, clowns etc. and many novelty competitions and
give aways on the day - including a Queensland travel prize. There will also be
a novelty Punters Club. As well as Barista coffee, a variety of food including
local mussel fritters will be on offer. Admission is $5.
