Taupo
racecourse, New Zealand.

Home to Racing Taupo , the Taupo track is renowned for its ability to provide a
consistent galloping surface leading up to major spring racing and, accordingly,
attracts many high-profile and well-bred horses which commence their
campaigns at the Stud Day and Spring Marquee Meeting. There are no
permanent grandstands at the course but a natural bank running the length of
the track provides excellent viewing. Marquees are erected at all meetings to
provide shelter from sun or adverse weather conditions.
From the north: as you enter Taupo township up the hill from the Control Gates
Bridge take the first left at the roundabout and proceed up Spa Road remaining
in the left lane when the road veers to the right past Taupo Bungy, continue
along Centennial Drive past Owen Delany Park until you reach the Racing Club
entrance on the left hand side.
From the south: from the lakefront turn right up State Highway 5 (Napier-Taupo
Road); take the second left into Crown Road; first right into Miro Street and
continue to T junction at the end of Miro Street and turn right into Broadlands
Road; take first left into Centennial Drive and racecourse entrance is on your
right.
Summer Meeting -
Locals and visitors alike flock to the course for this meeting taking advantage of
picnic spots under the trees or establishing themselves along the natural
grandstand which runs parallel to the straight. The theme for the day is
country picnic racing with prizes for the best car-boot picnic, and plenty of free
entertainment for the children.
In addition to the ever popular lolly scramble and bouncy castle, the children
can get to take to the track themselves against any game adults in the ever
popular Three-Headed Race. Local radio station More FM conducts a keenly
contested Fashion in the Field competition along with running additional
entertainment for the children. Roving musicians add to the flavour of the day
providing a variety of background music.
Punters are not forgotten either and can rest assured that the odds are
definitely in their favour at Taupo with Racebase statistics showing the Taupo is
the most "punter friendly" track in the country according to the strike rate of
favourites. Over the last 10 years favourites have won 41.8% of races at
Taupo which makes it a true punters' paradise!
